DIABETOLOGY

Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how the body uses blood sugar (glucose). Diabetes Mellitus is a lifestyle disease which is characterised by increase in blood sugar levels

Glucose is an important source of energy for the cells that make up the muscles and tissues. It’s also the brain’s main source of fuel.

Our diabetologists are committed to excellence in the diagnosis and management of diabetes. The latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques are used in the clinical evaluation and management of patients.

Types of Diabetes: Diabetes Type 1 Diabetes Type 1 or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus occurs more often in younger population. There is absolute lack of insulin and therefore these patients require insulin only to control their blood sugar levels. Diabetes Type 2 Diabetes type 2 Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus is the most common form of diabetes and it occurs in relatively older & obese people. In this type of diabetes, one is still producing insulin but it is either not being made in sufficient quantities or is ineffective in controlling sugar. Most people with Diabetes Type 2 can be treated effectively by diet control, exercise, oral sugar controlling tablets or insulin. Gestational Diabetes It develops during pregnancy. In this form of diabetes, blood sugar normalises after childbirth. Women with gestational diabetes are more likely to develop Diabetes Type 2 later in life.
